This portrait of the Italian director & actor, Pietro Germi, explores his work, from Italian neorealism to the birth of the Italian comedy. He constructed his movies in a conventional way but also experimented new path. His favorite actresses such as Claudia Cardinale and Virna Lisi, his collaborators and family testify.

THE COMOEDIA THEATRE, A REBIRTH

The Comoedia is one of the oldest theatres in the world. It is located in Lyon (France), in the city where cinema was born. The history of cinemas is told through the life of this theater. Inaugurated in 1914, this theatre exhibited sideshows before becoming a grand theater showing 70mm movies in the 60’s and 70’s. Saved from the demolition in 2003, it reopened in 2006, thanks to the commitment of passionate figures.

A documentary about the Belgian actor, famous for his roles in the Dardenne brothers’ movies (La Promesse), author’s movies and his talent for comedy (Rien à déclarer).

What’s an actor? We follow the actors Jacques Gamblin, François Morel and Christophe Brault in their rehearsals. Between concentration and laughs, we discover an intimate and fair portrait of an exceptional profession which requires an intense professional and personal involvement.

FASHION

The designs of Cristóbal Balenciaga display a fashion genius. If haute couture came to be recognized as an art form, it is largely thanks to him. The heritage of Balenciaga reveals a new system of perfect proportions around the female body. Linking simplicity and modernity, he has exercised a greater influence on his successors than on his contemporaries. Celebrities such as Givenchy give testimonies of his influence as an artist and as a person too.

LITTERATURE

The little poetic laboratory by Jean Rouaud, winner of the Prix Goncourt in 1990, makes us discover the wealth of worlds and literature that influenced the writer, and gave birth to a work, a style. The film opens the door of the laboratory, a sort of dark room, a cave where images that have counted for Jean Rouaud are projected. With what he calls his “aboveground imaginary”, the territories of his childhood are also presented, marked with the seal of a invasive religiosity.

BORIS VIAN, THE JAZZY LIFE

In Saint Thégonnec's Church, one of the biggest renovation French site, jewel of the Roman art heritage, located in Brittany, the restorers realize exceptional discoveries.

During the night from 4 to 5 February 1994, the Parliament of Brittany burnt. A huge restoration work starts, in particular for the paintings of the "Big' Chamber".

ARCHITECTURE

Commissioned by the city of Phnum Penh, in Cambodia to the Cambodian architect Vann Molyvan, (who worked with Le Corbusier), his “ideal” construction was brutally interrupted by the arrival of the red Khmers in 1975. The building got occupied in an anarchy way by inhabitants who installed electricity & water. The film shows in a very artistic way this fascinating building.

Publicly criticized during his short career in the interwar period, Robert Mallet-Stevens, architect and decorator, is finally receiving recognition by his peers. Some of the houses he built in the 30’s come into the spotlight. His extraordinary work is henceforth revealed to the public. The film is a tribute to Mallet-Stevens «modernist» vision.

MEN & PUPPETS

Men & Puppets is presenting the work of two major European puppet companies. The first episode is dedicated to one of the most interesting companies in Prague, called Karromato, led by a Spanish couple. The second episode follows Teatro del Drago, an Italian family troop, performing with different styles and techniques. The spectator dives into their fascinating creative processes, between modernity and tradition.

In the performance «The Lyer», the most famous Italian playwriter of the 18th century, Goldoni, sows in the state of the art, misunderstandings, twists and delicious fantasies. The play notably features the famous actor Simon Abkarian, and was directed by Laurent Pelly.
